I think the automoderator probably runs contrary to its own goal. Maybe some people still buy the piracy=lost sales argument, but I believe it's been proven through a variety of studies on other media that pirates either end up buying what they pirate/related media or wouldn't have bought anything even if a pirated copy wasn't available. The number of different VNs being sold and the number of copies sold has been trending up. The community has more fans than it had before and more customers. Personally, I look at it from an economic perspective. Access to this content is easier than it has ever been. So I have to ask, why is piracy seen as such a mortal sin when it appears to have brought us such great fortune? People have been saying that piracy will destroy this fledgling market for over ten years now and yet it's in better shape now than when they were making those claims. Without all the piracy and copyright infringement and everything else, we wouldn't have the community we have now. People are making EOLVNs that aren't garbage and we're actually seeing them for sale on steam. Despite this, we now have officially licensed translations of big name times rather than just nukige. Piracy and fan translations were the cornerstone of expanding interest in this niche market. The community is bigger than it has ever been. One might be lucky to see two or three decent VNs translated in a year. I was really excited when a patch was released for Tsukihime, as I had heard so much about it.

The community started as a tiny affair with the only localized titles being nukige. I'm still kind of amazed at the degree of sensitivity the VN community has towards piracy.
